We often get asked why businesses shouldn’t use Windows 11 Home, but Windows 11 Pro instead.
It’s a valid question.
Whilst both operating systems may appear the same from afar, they have very different features/capabilities and choosing the wrong one may have implications for your business.
In this blog post, we explore 6 of the main reasons why businesses shouldn’t use Windows 11 Home.
Some business applications and software require Microsoft 11 Pro for optimal performance and compatibility.
Applications like Microsoft 365 and Sage may experience compatibility issues if installed on Windows 11 Home.
Note: If you have a server in your IT system or use Microsoft 365 Business Premium or Entra ID, you won’t be able to connect and access your business’s IT systems unless you run Windows 11 Pro.
Windows 11 Pro adds lots of extra security features over Home including Bitlocker encryption, Information Protection and Windows Defender Application Guard, all of which are critical for securing your business data.
Business-grade antivirus and security software rely on the Pro features to fully protect your computer from threats.
Windows 11 Home is for personal devices and offers no business controls, including user management.
That means that if you lose access to your device, require a password reset or need to block access to the device, we won’t be able to help.
Following on from user management, Windows 11 Pro is essential to allow us to centrally manage and configure computer and user settings, enforce security policies, apply updates etc.
With Windows 11 Home, we have little control over the device in terms of updates and security policies.
Windows 11 Pro allows us to choose when (and even “if” in some cases) to install updates and patches.
This is important to ensure minimal disruption to productivity, to schedule when updates are applied and so we can block any updates that cause more problems than they fix.
Business security and compliance certifications like Cyber Essentials require Windows 11 Pro features.
So, even if you don’t need Cyber Essentials certification now, choosing Windows 11 Pro when you purchase a new device can save a lot of money and disruption in the future, should you ever need to achieve certification.
If you’re looking to purchase a new device with Windows 11, we highly recommend purchasing one with Windows 11 Pro installed, to avoid headaches further down the line.
Don’t forget that buying your equipment through Systemagic means that you’ll get the right specification and software, as well as potential cost savings.
