Meet the Apprentice: Rhys King

Did you know that last month more than 30,000 new apprentice jobs were pledged by employers. That’s over 7,000 more than in 2015! We spoke to Rhys our latest apprentice

National apprenticeship week is becoming increasing important each year, it allows young people to learn the vital skills they need to work in their chosen sector and provides the opportunity to make earning whilst learning a reality. At Systemagic we’ve provided apprenticeship placements for the past 7 years. We’ve thrown our latest apprentice Rhys into the hot seat to find out why he chose to do an apprenticeship and what he’s enjoying so far!

Name: Rhys King
Age: 19
Home town: Frome

How are you finding your apprenticeship? So far my apprenticeship has been really enjoyable. Everyone at Systemagic has made me feel comfortable straight away when joining and allowed me to fit in easily. The whole team is always open to offer their help and guidance, which is always reassuring when I don’t understand how everything works yet. This is always helpful when trying to learn new things.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship over university? I chose an apprenticeship over university because I feel apprenticeships offer a far wider and greater range of experiences. With an apprenticeship you get to try the job out which you’re aiming to eventually reach. This means that you will get an idea of if you will like the job or not. If you chose to go to university, then you’re committing yourself to try and get a job that you might not even enjoy.

What are you enjoying most about your role? The thing I love most about my role is that there is always something new to be learnt. Every day so far that I’ve been at Systemagic, I have learnt something new that will help me succeed to the best of my ability.

What do you do in your spare time? Now that I’m working, in my spare time I mostly sleep. I try and fit in a bit of football in-between that. I play football on a Saturday for Frome Town Sports.

What’s your go-to sandwich choice on a Friday morning**? I go all out with Bacon, Sausage and Egg, with tomato ketchup, in white bread.

**Every Friday morning the Systemagic team get together over a bacon sarnie, and choose from bacon, egg, sausage (or all 3!).

Our ongoing support to the apprenticeship scheme hasn’t gone unnoticed. We’ve won “Micro Employer of the Year” in the local Apprenticeship Awards twice in the last three years!
