When a device reaches end-of-life, we recycle it via our preferred recycling partner. This process follows WEEE guidelines.
We are also presented with a WEEE transfer of goods certificate as well as a data destruction certificate.
Our recycling partner physically collects all end-of-life devices from our offices in Bradford on Avon, where they are taken to a secure site.
This site is protected with alarms and CCTV and as an additional measure, all keys are stored in a lockbox.
The first step to recycling a machine is to remove the hard drive. Once the hard drive is removed, it is stored in a secure cabinet with limited access and CCTV coverage.
Next, the hard drive is wiped using ADISA-accredited software. However, if the hard drive fails to wipe, it is physically destroyed using a machine on-site.
Once all data has been destroyed, our supplier will attempt to refurbish any devices back to working order.
Successfully restored devices are sold to fund in-house training, or donated to schools, charities and non-profit organisations.
Any devices which cannot be refurbished are sent to a specialist refinery, where they are broken down into core materials to be reused and create new products.
In 2023, we successfully recycled 898 machines. As a result, we saved a total of 50,550kg of CO2 emissions from being emitted via landfill processes.
This is the equivalent of driving an average petrol car 125,478 miles (or nearly 16 times around the Earth!)
Our supplier is a registered data handler, waste carrier and Microsoft refurbisher.
They hold ISO9001, 14001 and 27001 accreditations (quality management, environmental management, and data security), and are also Cyber Essentials certified.
Once the process is complete, a data destruction certificate will be issued within 28 days.
